Battery Gardens Wedding Photos // Julie + Reid

Weddings with a fun bridal party are always a blast, but sometimes, it’s nice to just spend a quiet day with the bride and groom themselves. Julie and Reid had spent the last few years living in London where they met, but when it came to celebrating their love, there was no better place than being close to home in New York City.

The bride and groom both started the day at the Andaz hotel with their families, including Reid’s niece and nephew who brought so much charm to their preparations! It was definitely a change of pace for us walking into a calm and quiet hotel room, which led to an afternoon of stress-free picture taking and strolling along the Hudson River. Without a bridal party around, the bride and groom were able to fully enjoy one another and spend a good chunk of their wedding day alone before seeing all their guests at the ceremony. And it was just how Julie and Reid had hoped they would spend the most memorable day of their lives.

It was a picture-perfect day for a sunset ceremony at Battery Gardens, with a gorgeous view overlooking the Hudson River. Being able to see the Statue of Liberty in the distance was such a treat for their guests who had traveled into Manhattan from all over the world! There was no doubt that Julie and Reid had been anticipating this moment for a long time, and soon into the ceremony, both were teary-eyed with joy. We even caught them sharing a quiet moment of sweetness in the bridal suite just minutes after becoming newlyweds. These moments are what make our job so special!

The party was a hit as the happy couple danced the night away with their family and closest friends. Although one important family member had to stay home in London, Julie and Reid made sure that their beloved “only child” was honored on their special day. So it only made sense that their tuxedo-wearing pooch became my inspiration for a special ring shot!

Congratulations, Julie and Reid! Hope you both enjoy your last few months in London, and don’t forget to enjoy a couple more afternoon cuppas and buttery scones while you can (smile).

NYC Bride & Groom Portrait Session Photos // Akiko + Philip

Some brides are fortunate enough to have the wedding of their dreams—a grand affair of beautiful things and bottles of champagne shared with all the people they love. We so often take the privilege of having a wedding for granted, until we realize that we were the lucky ones. But good news is, it’s never too late to put on a wedding dress and feel like a bride.

When Philip told us that it’s been his wife’s dream to see herself in a wedding gown, and that they were flying to New York City from Tokyo to make that happen, we knew we had to extend our stay an extra day to make her dream come true! So in the next few weeks, Akiko bought a beautiful dress, white shoes, a fresh flower bouquet, and was transformed into a bride that morning before meeting us at Central Park to start her “Bride’s Day Photoshoot” with us. Of course, she didn’t forget her most important accessory, her groom (smile).

A short taxi ride later, we arrived in Dumbo Brooklyn for some photos of the classic scenery as the sun was starting to set. I’m sure their cheeks were tired from smiling by now, but Akiko was still glowing like it was her wedding day. We enjoyed the beautiful weather as we soaked up the last drop of sunlight, and with our bride and groom, we all walked into the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and surprised everybody there when they saw a wedding gown pass through the restaurant!

Even though they never got to have a wedding, the truth is, Akiko is lucky to have a husband who would come all the way from Japan so that his wife could fulfill her dream. And we are so honored to have been able to make it a reality.

Central Park Engagement Session Photos // Heena + Ruwan

Spring, love and Central Park—what a beautiful way to celebrate the best that New York has to offer! We spent a lovely afternoon with Heena and Ruwan strolling around Central Park, sharing stories, and admiring all the different dogs that were out at the park that day! As we were enjoying our day out with these fellow canine-lovers, the weather was heavenly…which meant we were sharing the park with a million other tourists and city-dwellers. Yikes! But with a little camera work, patience, and proper framing, we somehow “emptied the park” just for these love birds (smile).

When Heena told us she was planning to change into an Indian dress for part of the session, we knew immediately where we should go for that portion of the shoot. Although Bethseda Fountain is a little cliché, we knew right off the bat that the architectural elements at the terrace would be a perfect setting for her outfit. Turns out, those were some of our favorite pictures from the entire afternoon! Enjoy!

Germania Place Wedding Photos // Mari + Jonas

Spirits were high and smiles were all around as our bride and groom got ready for their wedding day in the Windy City. As much as we swoon over the dress, the flowers, and that 4-tiered cake, weddings have and always will be about the people it’s shared with. For Mari and Jonas, this was definitely a family affair, and their siblings, nieces and nephews were always nearby to share in the moment. We love capturing the look on people’s faces when they are with the people they love, but there’s nothing quite like the way a bride and groom look at each other on their wedding day. As we strolled along the Chicago Riverwalk with this happy couple, we couldn’t help but notice the way their faces lit up when they looked at each other. They were completely head-over-heels in love.

A beautiful ceremony and 300 of their family and friends awaited them at Germania Place, with four different generations present to witness the union between these two families. The celebrations continued as the newlyweds shared their first dance, their first meal, and a few thankful words for their families. It was all so heart-warming and sweet; nobody had any idea what was just around the corner!

Just as the evening seemed like it was coming to a close, trumpets and guitars were heard coming from the balcony. Soon, a full Mariachi Band showed up to start the party! Some of the employees from Mari’s family restaurant had put together this surprise to bring some dancing and music to the wedding, and it didn’t take long before the whole family was out of their seats and skipping around a giant sombrero on the dance floor. It may have been a confusing mix of different cultures, but that’s also what a wedding is all about—different people, cultures and traditions coming together to create a whole new family. And that’s worth celebrating!

Lake Hodges Engagement Photos // Paola + Michael

Spring is finally here! With young sprouts dressing the trees, and tender greens covering the bare grounds, it was the perfect time to kick off the season with a walk through nature with our cameras. If we can give one piece of advice to engaged couples preparing for their engagement session, it is to communicate your vision to your photographer and discuss every last detail, from location and time of day, to outfits, colors, and props. It definitely helped us pull this dreamy photo shoot together as we created a romantic wonderland for Paola and Michael just minutes from our home! She radiated like a goddess of the forest, and he was basking in her glow—together they looked so very, very in love. Can’t wait to celebrate with this gorgeous couple at their wedding in Temecula next month!

Venice Engagement Session Photos // Michelle + Daniel

Long distance relationships are not easy, but Michelle and Daniel have never let the extra miles defeat their love story. So for their engagement session, we went back to where it all began, at a cute little cafe in Venice where they had one of their first dates. After reminiscing over a shared glass of lemonade and some sweet bites, they continued the romance with a stroll through the quiet waterways of the Venice Canals, enjoying their precious time together before returning back to their own cities. And of course, no long distance relationship is complete without phone calls and video chat, or in their case, a string phone made from red Dixie cups!

Many of you know we travel all over the world for weddings, but never did we imagine what 2012 had in store for us. Between photo shoots, photographing weddings, and attending weddings, we flew over 30 times in the past year, visited a dozen different states, and racked up quite a handful of frequent flyer miles! It was one of the most challenging years we’ve ever had, but also one of the most rewarding. Even though we were only at home three days each week, we enjoyed creating so many amazing images for our couples to treasure for a lifetime. Brentwood Wedding Photos // Aelina + Albert

There’s something beautiful about winters in California, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the warm glow of the sun on a still, quiet land, or the fact that it doesn’t quite feel like winter at all (smile). Whatever it is, it made the perfect day for Aelina and Albert to start the first day of the rest of their lives together. With the blessings of all their closest friends and family, they tied the knot on this warm, winter morning at the Wedgewood Brentwood Golf Club, which lucky for us, made a great backdrop for pictures of the newly weds!

It’s not uncommon for daytime weddings to be a little more simple and laid-back, but Aelina and Albert didn’t settle for just lunch and background music at their reception. With some creativity and courage to get a little silly, they introduced a number of “Minute-to-Win-It” games to spice up the party! Just to name a few, Albert showed off his lightening speed as he unrolled two rolls of toilet paper in less than 60 seconds, and his brother skillfully stacked empty soda cans with a stick of pasta. The games were a huge hit!

After all was said and done, it was finally time for the newly weds to enjoy a little private time together in the amazing sunset at Roddy Ranch, which had the most epic views of its rolling hills and winding pathways. Our jaw was dropping everywhere we looked, and yeah, our bride and groom kind of looked like rock stars. It was pretty awesome. So of course, we soaked up every last drop of sunlight. Thanks for inviting us on this adventure, you two—what a great way to kick off the new year!

Westmount Country Club Wedding Photos // Michelle + Henry

It was a little unconventional for us to meet the bride and groom already dressed and ready at the venue, but it didn’t mean we had missed the party. Our day with Michelle and Henry started with a very sweet gift exchange that had all the bridesmaids googly-eyed for the ceremony to come, and the groom received….a cookie. As touching as it was, I guess there are some things we’ll just never understand!

It’s always a little challenging for us when we are restricted to a small area in the venue for portraits, but with a little lighting, charm, and good humor, even an ordinary space could be made fit for a princess. Michelle was glowing in her Vera Wang gown and delicate, white details, which made her journey down the aisle all the more dreamy. Before we all knew it, the party had kicked off and the night was a party they will never forget. And did I mention, they tore up the dance floor? Congratulations, you two!

Irvine Family Portrait Session Photos // Jenny + Simon

When you find out you’re expecting, everything changes. But not many of us can imagine what it felt like for Jenny and Simon when they found out they were expecting triplets! In just 9 months, they doubled their family size, and life was never the same.

We showed up at Jenny’s door soon after the little ones had woken from their nap and were getting ready for the photo shoot. It was such an eye-opener for us just seeing a glimpse of what life was like taking care of three babies who still couldn’t talk or walk. Seeing the cutest little stacks of laundry, three high chairs in the dining room, and all the milk bottles lined up on the kitchen counter, we couldn’t help but look at these super parents with a great amount of awe and respect. And with a 4-year-old in the mix, their life never has a dull moment (smile).

It was definitely fun documenting the little interactions and expressions of this lovely family. The triplets were so incredibly adorable and Isaac was being his silly self! Working with three kids who couldn’t stand on their own or communicate their thoughts posed its own challenges, but with a little creativity and a lot of patience, we still found some magical moments. So between a few teary meltdowns, watching Barney on an iPhone, and throwing cereal at the kids to keep them busy (true story!), we were able to create some beautiful memories for this young family. And of course, we didn’t forget to take some pictures of mom and dad—it must have been ages since they’ve been able to enjoy some time for themselves!

As the sun started to set, we followed the family back to their home, and decided to take a few pictures that showed their everyday life. At the end of the day, we tried to take one final group shot on their big red couch, but the attention span finally disappeared, mom and dad gave up, and all chaos broke out. But this became one of our favorite pictures of the day, because it really captured their family at the end of a long and memorable day. We left these tired, but proud, parents surrounded by their four bundles of joy, and felt truly honored to have been able to help this family remember how very blessed they are.
